Batterers Use DV by Proxy

DV by Proxy refers to a pattern of behavior which is a parent with a history of using domestic violence or intimidation, uses a child as a substitute when he no longer has access to his former partner.” Coercive Control by Proxy is a more useful term since domestic violence has come to represent primarily physical violence. Coercive Control by Proxy may include anyone who carries out, knowingly or unknowingly, tactics and behaviors for the abuser without the abuser having direct contact with the victim.

Coercive control (Stark, 2007) encompasses multiple types of tactics, including physical abuse, used by abusers to control or entrap a partner or spouse, or a former partner or spouse. Coercive Control by Proxy includes use of coercive control tactics through children, civil court personnel, department of human services personnel, and mental health personnel.

Abusers who use Coercive Control by Proxy may involve his own family members as well as the victim’s family members to carry out his tactics.

Discover how child custody disputes with abuser involvement impacts victims and children. Gain skills you can use in DV treatment to address Coercive Control by Proxy tactics used by your clients. 1. Dr. Debra,

This is certainly an important part of abusive behavior that is rarely talked about, probably even overlooked in the court system. Your course should be required for anyone treating couples who are together, separated or in the process of divorce.

  2. Dr. Erica,
Thank you for idenitfying this training need for mental health therapists. There wer so many clients who came into my office for therapy who were unaware of these issues in their relationship. When they were made aware, they were able to make conscious choices about how they wanted to live their lives differently.
