Redefining Resistance: Techniques to Open the Door in Advocacy with Domestic Abuse/Coercive Control Survivors
Course Overview:
Advocates working with survivors of domestic abuse and coercive control may encounter resistance at times. This course explores the basis for resistance utilizing motivational interviewing and the stages of change model.
Course Schedule: 3 two-hour classes:
Thursdays 2:30 to 4:30 PM EST- August 1, 8, and 15

This course is ideal for advocates, counselors, social workers, and other professionals working with survivors of domestic abuse and coercive control.
Course Objectives:
- Define Resistance: Understand what is meant by a “resistive” survivor and identify various areas of resistance, including resistance from both the survivor and the advocate.
- Stages of Change: Delineate resistance at various stages of change among domestic abuse and coercive control survivors.
- Survivor-Centered Model: Understand the survivor-centered model and its relationship to Motivational Interviewing.
- Practical Techniques: Learn and demonstrate survivor-centered/Motivational Interviewing techniques to effectively address and work with survivor resistance.
